Welcome to Not these two Fucking Guys podcast. Marc Rizzo. What's up, brother? What's up, guys? How are you? Thanks for having me. We appreciate the time. Thank you. Looking good, bro. I seen fucking some kettlebells on online. You fucking. You're looking good. Oh, well, you know, trying to stay young. Young. But I'm trying. I hear you, man, for I'm 44 and I'm fucking feeling everything.

Unknown
Yeah, I try Zumba, I do Zumba, like, every five times a week. Now I'm doing, like, what do you do at the gym? Like, Zumba, man, I do Zumba, I do Zumba. I like this dance class. You know, it's a how. First of all, thank you so much for giving us the time. And how are you? Good, man.

Unknown
I'm home for a little bit right now. We finished the El Nino tour about a month ago, so I've been home for about a month and I'm leaving Friday to do a solo tour out in the West Coast. So should be fun. Very cool. I mean, we have to ask, how does it feel to be back? It's great, man.

00:02:35:12 - 00:02:56:09
Unknown
You know, it's it's a new vibe to the band, the singer stuff. You know what this is all around, just like a completely different band. And I'm loving it, having a great time. That's awesome. I mean, it must, you know, I'm sure the the crowds and the fans are definitely looking at you on stage. They're like, If I look at this motherfucker.

00:02:56:11 - 00:03:20:03
Unknown
Yeah, yeah. It's real great vibe, you know, with the fans, man. And and been very accepting, you know, will be coming back. And so it's been awesome. I mean, it's like getting Ken Griffey back to your team. You're like, Yo, what the fuck? He's back. Bring him in. Mike has now I thought I heard possibly like you. Did you record already?

00:03:20:05 - 00:03:41:21
Unknown
Did you record something new with them? Yeah, we got them. Yep. We got a new record out. Almost out. That is. It's finished. Should be out. You know, hopefully before the year's over. That's what I'm thinking. Nice. What are we expecting from this album? Well, it's not the only new sound, but it's definitely heavier. You know, Everyone likes to say it, but it's definitely heavier.

00:03:41:23 - 00:04:09:06
Unknown
I did a lot of solos on it, so that's that's different for El Nino, New because awesome, man. You know, Marcos, our new singer, has just has more of a metal vibe. So I think it's definitely just all around heavy record, more of a metal record than ever in the past. And yeah, because I can remember like if you go back to the records that you were on, that was like almost like a period in time where like solos weren't to, they weren't, they weren't, they weren't popular, you know?

00:04:09:08 - 00:04:25:02
Unknown
Yeah. You know, I wasn't a big fan of that ever, you know. But, you know, it was what it was. And that's, that's really where I put a lot of my attention on on learning flamenco, you know, It's like, Alright, nobody's into metal and shred solos and I'm going to just focus on learning how to play flamenco guitar.

00:04:25:07 - 00:04:45:16
Unknown
Yeah. So and that I incorporated on those early El Nino records. So like, I still had a great time. That's awesome, man. I'm excited to hear this. That's like something nice and fresh. Yeah, Yeah, it's gonna be great, man. Good. So you're saying you're going out on a solo tour? Starting a solo tour? What's this about? Like what?

00:04:45:16 - 00:05:08:07
Unknown
What will the fans be expecting from you on this solo tour? So basically for, like, the last probably almost 15 years, I just do my solo gigs, usually just on the weekends. I do fly in dates and I go out and I play all the material off my solo records, which is like instrumental guitar stuff. And and then I put some covers in, but it's just me by myself.

00:05:08:07 - 00:05:24:22
Unknown
I played like a backing track with bass and drums on like an iPod and Jesus a And then I do all my guitar on top of it and it just makes traveling just so, so affordable, you know, and be able to just fly all over the place and play gigs by myself. So it's it's a lot of fun for me.

00:05:24:22 - 00:05:59:02
Unknown
It's it's, you know, it's just tons of fun. Where is the overhead? There is none. That's it's in people, you know, especially nowadays with how hard it is and expensive to tour. You know, I'm just out there doing my thing and, and like you said, there's no overhead, so it's great. That's fucking great, bro. That's like fucking we talked we talked to a lot of comedians on this podcast and we use a comparison of like, man, we don't understand what you do because like in a band you can, you know, you fuck up like, you know, it gets covered up, you know what I'm saying?

00:05:59:04 - 00:06:20:01
Unknown
A comedian, you're you're on the stage by yourself. Yeah, but you going out solo, it's just a drum track and like, hold on. Me, so to speak. Yeah. Like I said, for me, it's fun because it's just nonstop guitar. And if something did get messed up on my iPod. Yeah, that's cool. Guitar solo for a half hour longer.

00:06:20:03 - 00:06:40:00
Unknown
I got a guitar in my hand, the happier I am. So, yeah, it's fine. Yeah, that's awesome. So talk about your last tour with El Nino. How is touring different now than it was 20 years ago? Oh, man, it's it's it's definitely very different, I think is the technology, you know having a phone be to the video with people.

00:06:40:00 - 00:07:00:10
Unknown
I mean, I remember 20 years ago going to Europe and you were just cut off from back home in like if you had to get about it, you know, I mean, like they would leave you two weeks into the tour because you could have a phone anywhere, you know? Yeah. Yeah. It it was like you just put coins in and then you get cut off and, and you know, that would that be like, maybe every other day, Every two days.

00:07:00:11 - 00:07:18:13
Unknown
Yeah. So, so now it's, it's a lot more easier to tour with all this technology and being able to message people and wi fi and videos and stuff. It it's just so much more easier because back in the day it's like when you would go to Europe or South America like you, that's it. You were just like cut off from everything back home.

00:07:18:13 - 00:07:41:03
Unknown
You know, you'd be lucky if you can make a phone call every three days. What do you want from me? I mean, fucking what do you want? Like, I can't do anything. But, like, if you had a girlfriend like you all you argue, you know, I'm saying just, like, find a phone and then scream in your argument. You know, and argue, you know, I'm paying like 20 bucks a minute to argue with you.

00:07:41:03 - 00:08:23:13
Unknown
Can you keep it positive? We're going to face in three days when I find a pay phone? Rock, correct me if I'm wrong. Didn't we see them at Burchill? Yes. They were so fucking hot and sweaty. That show I just remember being. It's so fucking hot. It was kind of a great show. Burchill Yeah, yeah. Those shows were classic, man, you know, Burchill was a, a legendary place and that's really where El Nino, like we got our record deal that Roadrunner Records came out and we were starting to pack clubs and I remember we headlined Burchill and then from there we played virtual like almost every weekend, you know, and we, Rocko and I, we

00:08:23:13 - 00:08:45:17
Unknown
were in bands for years and we played we played with one of the last weekend's Berg show was open for for Love for locals and stuff, and we got to open for pity and and Motor grader if you remember motor grader when I was singing from Five Finger Death Punk correct. In fact, there was a local band. I don't know if you would know who they are.

00:08:45:17 - 00:09:04:22
Unknown
So they were a good band. They were calling me like the Mud Box. I think they were called. Yeah, I remember too. Okay, so I get a call from a promoter and like drummer got into a car accident. You guys want to open up the main stage? Yeah. What were you guys in? We were in the back. All lowdown.

00:09:05:01 - 00:09:35:08
Unknown
It was like a like a rap rock band back in the day. And. And we got to open up. And I remember the, you know, when the the screen starts to come up and they start cheering and it's like a cure for who we are. What? I'm going with it. Let's do this. Yeah. Yeah, man. So the year you're not going to reminisce, but the last time I saw you in person, it was at Debbonaire Music Hall in Teaneck and Teaneck.

00:09:35:10 - 00:09:56:11
Unknown
And we were watching a clinic being put on by Bumble Foote. Oh, yeah? Yeah. Was it a clinic or was it? No, I'm just being smart about it because he's good. He's that fucking good. Yeah. Oh, he's actually tomorrow I'm doing because I do videos with my girlfriend. We do videos for bands in the area and we fly off.

00:09:56:13 - 00:10:15:20
Unknown
We're actually doing some some photos for Bumble. So this new band, Art of Anarchy, they're they're freaking amazing. So I'm excited for that. Yeah. I just remember I know you were there and we were just watching him. Just. I remember that just shaking your head. Just like, Yeah, yeah. He's amazing. And he's just one of those next level shredders, you know?

00:10:15:21 - 00:10:48:11
Unknown
Yeah. And, and to piggyback on that, he's just such a nice guy that he's awesome and very cool dude, man. Very. Yeah, his name. His name should be Humble Foot, I think. Great. Humble foot. But that's awesome, man. That's cool with the solo gig. So you're you just keep going. You just keep you go from your band to band like you're like you are one of the few, at least around in this area that we knew that actually you're making a living and smiling and having a great fucking time in life.

00:10:48:11 - 00:11:10:23
Unknown
I'm assuming, you know, I don't know. But, you know, it was a rough last couple of years. But but other than that, I'm very grateful, man. It's been it's been a hell of a ride. I mean, I went from work in construction to all of a sudden El Nino got a record deal. And I was from that moment on, you know, I've just been on a rollercoaster of touring the world and and like I said, making a living.

00:11:10:23 - 00:11:36:12
Unknown
And I'm very grateful for that because it's a lot of fun Now. It was that year that was like your initial, like foot into like the music industry. Like when then when the El Nino got a deal. Yeah, when we got a record deal with Roadrunner and like 2000, that was like my first record deal. And I went from working a job to all of a sudden, you know, we were we were on the road and then we're doing Ozzfest and we're going to Europe.

00:11:36:12 - 00:11:54:10
Unknown
And it just was unbelievable. Then like an X months, you're playing virtual and then all of a sudden Roadrunner all through the video, we went into the studio and the next thing I knew, we were on the road and, you know, one thing led to another. Then I joined Soulfly and then 18 years flew by, you know, just insanity.

00:11:54:12 - 00:12:17:00
Unknown
And I'm sure. Yeah, you've talked about this shit so many times, but you're a big part of your career was with Soulfly and then that I'm I'm assuming that ended I don't know, on good graces. If it did but had it. How are you with those guys? Is it just. Okay, Take care. So you soon I mean, it was, you know, the right thing wasn't done during COVID.

00:12:17:00 - 00:12:32:05
Unknown
They took out thousands of dollars in poppy loans, kept it just for themselves and our family. And that's was it. I'm out of here, man. You know, you're not going to cut me in on something like that. I said, I'm out, you know, So. So that's that I hit I was already on the road anyway, doing my solo project.

00:12:32:05 - 00:12:48:01
Unknown
Yeah, yeah, yeah. And you just, man, you know, I'll just do my solo thing. And so I, I continue to do my solo thing. And then I reconnected with El Nino around that time, too. And, and then El Nino, you know, got right into the studio and we hit the road also. So it's just been, you know, little big deal, man.

00:12:48:02 - 00:13:11:14
Unknown
Water under the bridge. I just jump on the net even, you know. Yeah. I just can't see like fucking 18 years. It wasn't like you were, you know, like a year and a half, like, you know, Hey, listen, you're a year and a half. Like, take care, Ben. 18 years is a fucking career almost, you know, like, that's it when you're when you gave two decades of your life and then something like COVID hits and you don't do the right thing for it for someone who's worked for you that long.

00:13:11:14 - 00:13:26:23
Unknown
That's what I just said. I've had enough and I bailed. So what was the reasoning behind it, though? What was it just like? All right, we're just going to, you know, not include Mark in this or like, you know, basically, you know, basically that was it, you know, But there was a million other things that could that whole year we didn't do nothing.

00:13:26:23 - 00:13:45:20
Unknown
You know, there was no money being generated for for for, you know, myself, the crew for that, the bass player in the band. You know, they're a family run business. So they basically just kept everything for themselves. It just shut down the entire shop, which is fine. I mean, it's like, if that's what you want to do, that's fine, but don't expect me to come back, you know, when things open up.

00:13:45:22 - 00:14:09:23
Unknown
So I didn't do good. Fuck them in that. I like to ask artists this question because I'm just interested on this, the behind the scenes. So, like, you do a song. All right, so you worked with SOULFLY, you work with this band, you do solo, you you have your hands into many projects. Are you like an are you like an LLC?

00:14:09:23 - 00:14:31:13
Unknown
Almost like, like how how are you getting payments? Like you have to go into like, you know, money. But I'm saying like, how are you receiving your, your royalties for everything. Yeah, well, so, so El Nino. Yes I get my royalties from because everything was split fairly Soulfly was not, you know, I just got paid out for making records and for touring basically.

00:14:31:15 - 00:14:55:01
Unknown
Okay, I am an LLC now because, you know, after COVID, during COVID, I was not. And then I got wise to you know, if I was an LLC at the time, I probably could have got some help. But now I have an LLC solo project and I basically, you know, I really make the bulk of my money just from going out and doing gigs, you know, that that's really, you know, and most conditions do.

00:14:55:01 - 00:15:15:16
Unknown
I mean, most musicians aren't really on this level underground metal type stuff. Yeah, really just you're making money, going out, hitting the road and touring from show money, merch money. So. So yeah. So like I heard a, like an interview years ago with Sonny from Pro Day. He's like, he's like, Yo, if I ain't torn, I ain't making money, bro.

00:15:15:18 - 00:15:40:03
Unknown
Yeah, well, that's why the minute the minute I was able to hit the road and 2021, I had all the states that were open, I was like, Screw this man. I was working a job doing like, you know, home renovations with a buddy of mine that was like, I was very grateful who hooked me up with the minute I knew that states like Texas, Florida, Montana were allowing concerts, I hit all those places, sold them, and just me by myself with my iPod, you know.

00:15:40:03 - 00:16:02:13
Unknown
So I was able to fly out for myself and have a low overhead. And I said, To hell with it, man. I'm doing this, man. I can't sit here only going crazy. Yeah. So talk to me about the different mindset or if there is a difference between playing by yourself. What your iPad, iPod, iPad, air, or playing a festival.

00:16:02:15 - 00:16:35:21
Unknown
You know, in Europe for 100,000 people. Like, what's that? There has to be a difference. Yeah, I mean, there's definitely those big festivals that I've played over the years with El Nino and SOULFLY. You know, there definitely there's an adrenaline rush, you know, there's no doubt about it. But honestly, man, I just I'm focusing on playing guitar and I'm really, really so just like concentrating on what I'm playing that to me, it doesn't matter if there's 20 people in the audience or there's 20,000 people in concert.

00:16:35:23 - 00:16:53:08
Unknown
It's just all about what I'm playing on the guitar and me walking off stage knowing that I played to the best of my ability. Like I'm I'm really very just just concentrating on playing to the best of my ability. And I would rather play in front of 20 people knowing I had a great show than playing in front of 20,000.

00:16:53:08 - 00:17:20:16
Unknown
And I had a horrible show performance wise. Wise for myself. Yes. Weird, you know, because you would think, like I'd be more amped up to playing shows, but, you know, it's just more it's more about what I'm playing on the guitar that really matters. And so I know obviously we never played to the caliber that you did, but like, we've played, you know, some pretty cool shows like the Wollman Theater, Starland Ballroom, and then like when we played like a club that has like, you know, there's like seven people.

00:17:20:16 - 00:17:48:04
Unknown
I'm like, more nervous. I'm like, like a more antsy with seven people in front of me than there is with 1200, you know? Yeah, But yeah, you know, you're at your stage, you know, you could play that a fucking waitress and you know, playing guitar or it's really, I'm to the point where I'm just I'm so wrapped up into playing and playing to the best of my ability and hitting the right notes, you know, in time that that's really what I try to focus on.

00:17:48:04 - 00:18:13:20
Unknown
That's the most important thing to me. Gotcha. I work for a video production company and today I put on Revenge Beast. Oh. Oh, yeah. Not now. We're talking about kids who listen to the 1975 and they listen to Incubus, but nothing wrong with those bands. Sure. But I was like, you know, we all put on it. Check this song.

00:18:13:21 - 00:18:34:08
Unknown
I'll check the song. I'm like, Yeah, check this song out. A couple of them were like, Oh, I was like, This is some fucking metal. Thanks. Yeah, that's great. I really I'm enjoying this a lot. Like, like a lot. And I'm just. I knew that you came out with this, but I'm just coming up to this now, man.

00:18:34:08 - 00:18:59:05
Unknown
And. But I'm actually really enjoying it, and I'm loving how there's like that. This contrast of, like, this death metal type of approach in a way. But you would hear you're like a solo, like you, you like flipped to the rhythm, to the clean channel and there's and you can hear the notes. Thanks, but you're playing speed metal at the same time, the drums.

00:18:59:08 - 00:19:18:07
Unknown
And it's a lot f metal, you know, it's it's, it's influenced by bands like Carcass and Death. And I've always been a huge death metal fan. I've always played in death metal bands growing up as a kid. And over the years I've always wanted to do something like I did growing up, like, you know, in the early nineties and stuff.

00:19:18:09 - 00:19:38:10
Unknown
And during the pandemic, I just, you know, some of my buddies that were in revenge piece, I was just I just hit them up and I was like, Let's, let's do this, man. Let's just start sending tracks back and forth to direct, sitting at home doing nothing. So we wrote and recorded a whole record from home, which is the first Revenge piece record Upstate Records has offered us a deal and they put the record out.

00:19:38:10 - 00:19:56:00
Unknown
So I'm really proud of the record. It's it's really some of the heaviest stuff I've ever recorded. Yeah. Now that's something that, like you said, you've always played in these bands in Love, that kind of stuff. But the actual finally be able to put out a recording like that that just it's different than the rest of your catalog, obviously.

00:19:56:02 - 00:20:17:04
Unknown
Yeah, Well I mean SOULFLY brought a lot of death metal influence into that band when I joined, but but this is just like straight up brutal death metal. Like we're not even trying to, you know, even think about like, like radio type song. It's just it's just brutal death metal. And I really wanted to put something out like that.

00:20:17:04 - 00:20:43:17
Unknown
And and, you know, sitting home during a pandemic, I was definitely in a pissed off mood, you know? So it's a bit off record, there's no doubt about it. Revenge pieces, equivalent of Runnin Red's given fucking Cops the finger. Like that's the equivalent of like where we are like, here and this bloodshed. Yeah. When I hear solos like that that you have on of I think I think it was like on the song called I Am and I did like the next one.

00:20:43:17 - 00:21:21:10
Unknown
I heard the nomadic. That was pretty dope, but I so I hear like chaos and like it's frantic but melodic and beautiful notes all mixed into what? Thank you. Is that like, how many is that? Like, how your mind thinks with, like, even other things in life? Like you're because your solos are so intense and you can hear the notes and then then it does a run that, you know, a scale, whatever the arpeggio, the fucking what and but like how does your like, does your mind, are you that chaotic upstairs, if you know what I'm saying.

00:21:21:12 - 00:21:39:16
Unknown
Yeah. I probably got some issues, there's no doubt about that. But the funny thing about that record is that like, I don't really know how to record, honestly, I'm not good putting my bass player, Brendon, he produced the record and engineered it and so he knows how to do that stuff. But all my solos were done in one take.

00:21:39:18 - 00:21:57:24
Unknown
Believe it or not, I just it was all just improvised. I've never done that before. Like I've touched upon that. And records were, Yeah, yeah. But the Revenge Bitch record, I didn't have the option to punch and to construct the solos. So everything was just one take, improvise is basically and that's probably why it has that kind of chaotic.

00:21:58:01 - 00:22:19:06
Unknown
You know, I'm running through scale and I try to play slow melodic because like, I didn't have, you know, I had to come up with this stuff, lives right off the cuff. So that's what that's all about. However you want to describe that method off the cuff or whatever, but that's what listener's ear, though, that at least someone like I can never play that.

00:22:19:06 - 00:22:41:00
Unknown
But I know what I'm hearing in a way, and I'm like, Oh man, I can put a fucking great melody. And then it's like, Whoa, I heard that. And then it's like, and I've always dug that when guitar players you can hear like, I know I think you're a fan of like, like, like Zach Wall, right? Zach was fucking amazing.

00:22:41:00 - 00:23:00:24
Unknown
We all know this. But like, there's, there's times that he just, you just hear about little things and he's going and he's going and he's going in. You're like, All right, it's pretty cool. It's good. It's good. But when there's, you know, different types of, you know, dynamics with the breakdown and I'm enjoying the melodies that you have that you're, you know, sprinkling in there.

00:23:00:24 - 00:23:20:05
Unknown
So I'm a fan that. Yeah, I try to play melodically, you know, I definitely try to and I love melodic death metal like a lot of death metal bands. When I do solos, it's a lot of dive bombs and whammy bar stuff. I don't do any die bomb whammy bar stuff at all. So I really I really just try to think melodically.

00:23:20:10 - 00:24:05:13
Unknown
Mm hmm. Yeah, there was. So I'm curious to hear about this. Your dime fan, right? Oh, yeah. Okay. Yeah. And we just spoke about Zakk Wylde. What what's your take on the new Pantera? I would say new Pantera, the lineup that they're going out with now, what is your take? Yeah, you know, I love it, but, but basically just because Zach Wilds part of it, you know my only reason why that for me Alice and three other guitar players you know being that Zach Wylde and Dimebag were boys and like they were like the best of friends and they came from the same era of music and it had kind of similar styles.

00:24:05:19 - 00:24:26:23
Unknown
Yeah, I was waiting for years for this to happen because I know they were talking about it even when Vinnie was alive, because Jack is the only guy who could do it, you know, he's the only one that has the right, I think, to do this. This Pantera bullet, Pantera, you know. Yeah. There's nobody else in the world that would make it authentic and make it cool.

00:24:27:03 - 00:24:46:17
Unknown
Like Zach don't you know? And I'm loving it, man, because I'm loving to hear Zach do his interpretation of the dime solos, you know, like play the dime solos note for No, But then throw in the Zach Wild style. And I love I love Zach's playing as much as I love Dime. So I'm loving this this reunion that they're having we need.

00:24:46:19 - 00:25:10:09
Unknown
He's doing it with nothing but respect to the Don, That's all. I mean, it's it's he's doing it tastefully and with full respect to Dimebag. And that's that's the only way you could do it. Yeah. I mean if you go to any Black label society show we need pay sure the dime and or Vinnie every single show. So I think I think that you know I was I was a big Pantera fan.

00:25:10:11 - 00:25:30:07
Unknown
I agree with you 100%. You know, it had it it had to be him. It had to be saying it's a it's a tribute and it's for the family and brothers and a friend, you know, and the fans. It had to be him. Had to be him. That's it. I mean, there's nobody else that that that could pull it off and do it tastefully.

00:25:30:09 - 00:25:50:23
Unknown
Yeah. Yeah. And be accepted by Pantera fans. Now I hope they record new music, but I don't think they would do that era. They should call that maybe something different, maybe call it a mouth for war, you know, be something maybe, but not to. I would love to hear them do some new music, so let's hope that they do.

00:25:51:00 - 00:26:15:01
Unknown
My my standout for me is Charlie. He is a walking phenomenal on this tour is he's incredible man. I mean, he's he's one of the top drummers in thrash metal, man. He's, I think, very underrated. I think the drummers out there, they know how good he is. But I don't think people really realize how amazing, you know, when Charlie was all the thrash metal drummers over the years.

00:26:15:03 - 00:26:34:16
Unknown
Oh, yeah. Oh yeah, I agree with you. I think he's like the MVP, so. Yeah, yeah. Because everybody kind of knew that. Like, you know, we're going to get Zach to do this. But I mean, I never heard of any rumor about who was going to play drums. Yeah. And then when you heard him, you were like, Oh, okay.

00:26:34:18 - 00:26:55:08
Unknown
And I'm like, they went. They went with someone from that era. Yeah, Yeah. And he just fight. He's fucking slaying it. Yep. I got to say, though, Phil sounded good though. Now, man, he sounds better than he did. Than he did ten, 15 years ago. Yeah, well, I think he from what I heard, he quit drinking. And, you know, he's.

00:26:55:09 - 00:27:22:11
Unknown
He's got a very positive, you know. Yeah, I too. No shoes. No shoes on. He's okay. He's there. Good. You see him? He's like that. He always played with, like, no shoes or. This is just like, anything. Like it's new. Yeah. Yeah. Uncle Phil to around 2015, I had the pleasure with another band of mine. A band was called Empire Fallen.

00:27:22:13 - 00:27:49:12
Unknown
Yeah, And. And we were recording with a mutual friend of ours, Derek Clyde Bash. Okay. Yeah. So, yes. And I think it's important to keep people staying alive. Jordan And I know he passed suddenly, and what a fucking musician. Yeah. You know, he, he, he was he was with us and he recorded an EP for us and we enjoyed that time.

00:27:49:14 - 00:28:07:15
Unknown
And, and he would come in and be like, Oh, why don't you play this? And he's like, No, no, no. And I'm like, All right, Derek, thank you. Yeah. You know, Derek was one of my best buds, man. Super talented dude. I've recorded most of my solo stuff. He played bass in my solo band. You know, we were best buds for years, man.

00:28:07:15 - 00:28:27:08
Unknown
I took him out on the road with me with my solo project. He was guitar tech for me in Soulfly for a little bit. I love this old band. Hello Eden Like Crazy, that one record that they had. They also good? Yeah, he was. You know, I would call him the New Jersey legend, you know. I mean, he was incredible.

00:28:27:08 - 00:28:56:23
Unknown
And I miss him, you know? And it sucks that, you know, that he he passed on, man. You know? And. Yeah, yeah, I always, you know, I got nothing but great memories of good me Derek getting in trouble all over the world. But know always fun to be around at shows. It was wild. And then he me and him would we would go out and he just, you know, he would find just things to do, you know, at 3:00 in the morning and countries you know, just just I won't go too into detail.

00:28:56:23 - 00:29:16:04
Unknown
But one time we weren't even in Israel. We did Ozzfest with Soulfly and Daryl was with me. And like we had a we had to fly home at like six in the morning. The show just ended at like ten, 11 or something. And Derek's like, Man, we're going to find we're going to find a strip club and we're in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, or, you know, I'm like, there's no strip clubs.

00:29:16:04 - 00:29:37:07
Unknown
There's like, I'm going to find one. Derek found the strip club, and we went all nighter and we were just, you know, a mess when we got on the plane at like six in the morning, fly on epic evening and it was just another day with Arab men, you know. Well, remember, you have to hang on to that.

00:29:37:07 - 00:29:57:16
Unknown
So yeah, I'm glad that you shared some good words because I wanted to. I know that we we both literally know him, so I wanted to get that out of there. There's this one rock, there's this one story. So I'm recording with Derek and Derek is like, Oh, this is a good part right here. I just want to add this little solo.

00:29:57:18 - 00:30:13:01
Unknown
I think you should add a solo right here, just a couple bars. And I'm like, okay. He's like, Might try a couple of things. So he actually left for like, you know, maybe 15 minutes and I'm working on stuff. He comes back in, he goes, Oh, by the way, Rizzo's come, Marc Rizzo stopping by. And I go, Why the fuck is he coming by?

00:30:13:01 - 00:30:29:23
Unknown
Why can't he come by when we're tracking drums? Like like a fucking guitar guy? Like this is coming by. When I see you walk in, you know, you're like, Hey, hey, you're very nice. Hey, what's up, man? What's up? Oh, what are you working on? Empire Fall and this and that, whatever. And he's like, Derek's like, Do it, take it.

00:30:29:23 - 00:30:58:15
Unknown
I'm like, You fuck it. And like, I'm, like, playing, like, good God, fucking horrible. But it was just a funny story. And he was. Yeah, he was a good guy. And, and I, and I actually the last time watching him was in 40 below summer to playing bass. Playing bass with them. Yeah. Well him and my drummer Anthony Davis, Yo Derek and Anthony, they started playing with 40 below Summer then and, and they were killing it, you know, they were 40 blows.

00:30:58:20 - 00:31:21:16
Unknown
They're still doing great. You know, that was enough with Derek playing bass and, and those guys, man. And I think they got a new record coming out too, so. Yes, Yes, I did. I don't know. I just started this for some reason. Did did you or did you not rehearse at streets in Street in Paterson? Clifton. Yeah, but by connections.

00:31:21:18 - 00:31:48:03
Unknown
Yeah, of course you can. Connection. Yeah, I did. I was there from like 2003. Move out 2007 because the guys that used to play my soul band at that time had a band called Oh, were they called? I forgot. But drummer's name was Teddy Gibbons and Daddy. Teddy. Teddy was great. One lump sum. No. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I said I used to rehearse in their room.

00:31:48:03 - 00:32:07:11
Unknown
That's what it was. Well, my son's pons Fonz was a singer or something. Yeah. Alonzo and Adam? Yes. Adam. Yeah. Teddy Great drummer. Yeah. I used to jam with Teddy because he recorded on my first solo record, and. And then I would. I shared that room with them for, you know, maybe two, three years or something like that.

00:32:07:11 - 00:32:25:08
Unknown
So yeah, I was there for a bit. We were there. Yes, we were there at that time. And I do remember and I think my cam was there too, for some reason. They might have been there for a little bit, but that's that's cool. So sorry. So what, what do we got going on? We got, we got a solo tour start up next.

00:32:25:08 - 00:32:46:08
Unknown
What, what, what do we see in the future from Mr. Rizzo? Where the fuck are we going, son? Where are we going to? I'm going to Disneyland. Yeah, so I'm leaving Friday. Well, tomorrow we're doing this. This video shoot with with Bumble for this new band, which I'm excited for. So that's just something I do on the side with my girl.

00:32:46:12 - 00:33:07:18
Unknown
We've got a video production company See us and why Production thing. Blake needs any video work. Although you said you work for a video company, right? Oh, good. Yes, Right. So we're doing that. And then Friday early, I'm flying to Vegas. I got a solo gig in Vegas, in L.A., somewhere in northern California and then Idaho. And then I'll fly home so I won't be gone for about a week.

00:33:07:20 - 00:33:28:15
Unknown
And then I just got I just do these flying dates with my solo project, you know? So I got that. And then I'm doing some local things, too. August 27. So I got this other side project, August 27. I'm playing with my project, Acoustic Vendetta, and we just go out, we just fly around Northern Jersey, we just play acoustic rock, classic rock, but we do have some originals and we're about to tune.

00:33:28:15 - 00:33:49:19
Unknown
It's really cool stuff, man. It's kind of like our ends and it's just two acoustic guitars, percussion, and we just just play some classic rock type stuff. So August 27th, I'm playing with Acoustic Vendetta at Blue Arrow Farm, which is by Warwick, New York. It's a pretty person. Yeah. And and then I just got I just got some flying dates on the weekends.

00:33:49:19 - 00:34:12:22
Unknown
I got something, I think in Wisconsin. I got something in Kentucky. Everybody could just follow my social media. I'm always putting up my tour dates. Yeah, work and everybody follow you. Any, any Facebook Instagram on Tik Tok now. So that's YouTube. I do a lot of my live videos on YouTube and Tik Tok, but yeah, all the social media and all that stuff.

00:34:13:02 - 00:34:35:00
Unknown
And then October, they'll use you in a tour with the Devil Driver. So most of October I'll be on the road with you. So remember the times where all you had to do was play guitar. Yeah, yeah, a lot of booking now, you know, now it's just me booking my own project, you know? That's all I was ask.

00:34:35:02 - 00:34:58:02
Unknown
Like, are you, are you physically like, Hey, it's like, I'm sure you have connections all over the country. Like, are you like, Hey, Johnny guy coming? Yep. It's a it's a little bit of me. It's a little bit of some friends of mine, you know, just I try to just get his, you know, keep at least keep my weekends booked solid, you know, So being myself and then people that that help me out, you're pretty busy.

00:34:58:04 - 00:35:21:22
Unknown
That's awesome down. But I'm tired here in your schedule right? Making me tired. Got busy enough man. I the guys that complain about being on the road like I don't get it, man. For me, it's it's it's a paid vacation. And, you know, there's nothing to complain about. You know, you go out, you get to do what you love, have some food, see some people who are.

00:35:22:00 - 00:35:49:05
Unknown
Who enjoy what you do. Yeah. And then you fuck off and you go back. You go to the next state paid vacation. It's fun to play guitar. I'm very lucky, man. And that's what that's what we'll ended off on. That's a great I, I commend you and I think that's awesome. And I'm very happy for you. And you're, you're a local dude from New Jersey and good luck with everything and we'll see you around, man.

00:35:49:05 - 00:36:15:00
Unknown
And we really appreciate the time. Yeah. Thank you, guys. I appreciate it, man. Keep it touch man. Wank. Absolutely. Right. Well, I'd rather have a great thank you. The great Marc Rizzo. Be good there. The great Marc Rizzo. Yeah. Chances local. Don't tell anybody. But if I didn't have a family, I wouldn't mind his life. Don't tell anybody.

00:36:15:05 - 00:37:05:20
Unknown
We'll tell anybody. Now. That's that. He seems like a guy like you. He's. He's like you. He can't sit still right with you on something, except he's got guitar skill. So deep. To be honest, he's just like you. Except one thing. Except one thing. The guitar aspect here, that's fantastic. Now, that's. I mean, like, I know you don't play guitar, but we play in a band, but like, if and again, like I said to him, I can't play a lick, no pun intended, of what he plays, but I can hear like I can hear what he's playing.

00:37:05:20 - 00:37:38:15
Unknown
And I'm like, There's people who play guitar and then there's people who own the guitar, you know? I'm saying, Yeah, So like, I can I can cook right? But I can't make the shit that fucking Gordon Ramsay makes. But when I see it or I tasted, I'm like, Yeah, that's good. Yeah, I hear you. So give him a follow everybody out there and check out his fucking dates, Check out his music, his solo project, Revenge Beast, El Nino, the Nino.

00:39:44:22 - 00:40:21:13
Unknown
But we got to go. We got to go the other way right now, you know? Okay, well, keep going, keep going, keep going. I will touch and go more. And this is why he's a fucking AJ. Oh. Oh, no. All right, so what do we got? Our playlist? Not these two fucking guys. Rock, metal playlist. Check it out.

00:40:21:15 - 00:40:52:17
Unknown
Over 100 rock and metal songs that are going by our favorite bands. Rock name, a band 40 below. We just talk about them. Fuck, it's not on. Here it is. Rope. What's up? Oh, yeah, Right. All right, Ready? Down. It's on there. Bury me in smoke a day to remember. Yeah, it's on there, huh? The use. Yes, it's there.

00:40:52:19 - 00:41:23:19
Unknown
Wow. Oh, by the way, I put on a decode by Paramore, one of my favorite fucking songs. I think that was on the Twilight soundtrack and never saw the movie, But I. That was good. Anyway, if you're on Spotify, not these two fucking guys. Playlist, rock, metal, check us out. Give us a like and put it on. When you're at the gym, when you're fighting with your girl or your man, depending on your preference.

00:41:23:21 - 00:42:02:13
Unknown
Driving to work, driving to work at the gym, fucking you know, it'll get you going. All right, let's do a little franchise and then explain to me what a franchise tag is. Are we doing it like, live? Yeah. Iraq? No. So how's your summer going so far? Oh, so far, so good. And yourself? It's going well, but it's going fast.

00:42:02:15 - 00:42:38:05
Unknown
It always does. And when the summer ends, what begins? Football. Football season. Little, little something. Something. Giants camp. I want you to explain something to me. I'm not really too up on this. So as of yesterday or today, depending on when you're listening to this, we signed Saquon, Barkley, Barkley. We got him to a one year 11 million I think.

00:42:38:07 - 00:43:01:07
Unknown
Yeah, 11 million. One year. You got a little signing bonus. Okay. So basically they were going to put the franchise tag on him, which basically they, they keep him under control for that year. Right. And they, he would get paid like what the market value is for like what they deem for a running back. So what does that mean?

00:43:01:12 - 00:43:39:19
Unknown
Like that means that under control, what is like keep him under control. It means his contract. His contract was out there, the option to put a franchise tag on him, keep him for another year, but pay him, you know, the the market value of what he's worth or his years in and you know level of player look that kind of said let's say he say say he was like I fucking like it here then then he then he could take it, sit out the season, not get paid and then go to sign with somebody next year which is brutal and football sitting out season.

00:43:39:21 - 00:44:14:02
Unknown
Well I mean he's a running back and the life span of running backs now career spans like three and a half years. Right. And he's entering his fourth or fifth year, whatever it is. Yeah, he had a great year last year. But now the problem is, is that they're devaluing the position of running back where, you know, the league is built around quarterbacks, obviously, but they're sitting there going the Bill Belichick method, the whole NFL seem to have adopted it where they're not playing big money for running backs because of the lack of longevity.

00:44:14:04 - 00:44:40:06
Unknown
Right. They're building it around quarterbacks and I get it. That being said, I love seeing one Barkley. I think he's like a generational talent. I think he'll be the exception to the rule. The big thing on him was if he could stay healthy and that's that's that's always the case. Can you be healthy? Can you stay healthy? And also the one thing to his advantage as a running back he can catch.

00:44:40:08 - 00:45:08:13
Unknown
Yes, he's versatile. Yes, he's versatile. He has he has that hardnosed style, though. Right. But but he you know, they are, you know, this year, next year, you're after they're building a team around Daniel Jones. And I know people say, oh, they had one half decent year. I don't know I think I think he showed a lot last year, you know, responding to a new coach, Daboll, new GM.

00:45:08:13 - 00:45:30:17
Unknown
I think that the Giants showed me enough where I'm a believer of it wasn't a fluke year. It's it's it's what the right coaching can do for a team. And I think and I think obviously the team is better with Saquon. Barkley Do you agree or disagree with the rule? How long has it been even in the NFL?

00:45:30:19 - 00:45:56:12
Unknown
I that stupid franchise I don't know. I mean, I don't know. It doesn't sound like it like like you're blocking the girl from leaving your bedroom. Yeah. Essentially it's like I think that you can't go anywhere. Now you say anything but the old saying, like, doesn't it sound fucked up? Like. Like to me, it sounds like, Bro, you're actually forcing me.

00:45:56:12 - 00:46:17:06
Unknown
I can't leave, so. I guess so. So that means I have to sit out a year if, like, say, if I fucking hated you or I hate the team, or I have to sit out a year and not play. And then it's not about the price on the franchise tag. You're getting pretty much top dollar. So it's not like it's like they're keeping you and paying you like shit.

00:46:17:08 - 00:46:34:07
Unknown
Now That's just, I guess just to make that, you know, sweeten the pot for them to give me a signing bonus and something elsewhere. So he's going to make $1,000,000 more, so more or less than he would have on the franchise tag. Now, what happens next year? I mean, we don't know. But I'm saying, like, what? I know.

00:46:34:09 - 00:46:51:18
Unknown
So he's willing to bet on himself right now. Right. They signed a deal for one year, 11 million, whatever it is. So he's going to better himself, not maybe the Giants didn't want to give a multiyear deal, which I understand. And that, you know, it's it's weird to say at his age, who is in the league for, you know what I mean?

00:46:51:18 - 00:47:15:09
Unknown
But that's that's the life of a running back. He's willing to better themselves, have a big year and get a big contract. And hopefully for his sake, it's what the Giants you know. So, yeah, he's the best running back the Giants have had in 20 years. I'm sorry. Like, you know I mean, he's no Gerard Bunch. No disrespect to Tiki Barber.

00:47:15:11 - 00:47:48:23
Unknown
I would rather had Barkley than Barber. Just my my opinion I'm more of an Otis Anderson type OJ Anderson. Yeah my man he was good is a beast the Bloomfield fireman played the New York Giants or whoever wanted to show up from the Giants that night at Pulaski Park in Bloomfield in 1990 something Summer. And I was a little kid, and I went there and I was standing next to Gerard Bunch.

00:47:49:00 - 00:48:17:10
Unknown
So if for any of you out there, he was, I think, a fullback for the New York Giants, Pepper Johnson was there, played centerfield, some guy had a fucking frozen rope. The pepper Johnson, he fucking tried to catch it, fell backwards. That's not a sport. Not a sport. But I was standing next to Gerard Bunch and I remember being like, I think I was probably like 12, 13 and I was coming, you know, a little boy with a weird full beard.

00:48:17:16 - 00:48:49:06
Unknown
You know, I was receding a little bit, and I remember no homo looking at his thighs because he had shorts that were so fucking short. But then he had the spandex underneath. You know, I have never seen thighs on a fucking human in my life. Like, I can only imagine him. I'm sorry. Well, that's snake that I can't imagine.

00:48:49:11 - 00:49:24:19
Unknown
Like him just fucking squatting for 25. Just, just to fucking get reps in and to enjoy like, like I've never seen like his thighs were like this, but, but if you look at Saquon Barkley, his fucking legs are humongous. But you got a running back, bro, right? To take kids. Saquon like trains like boxing to like he's, he's he's fucking he's the real deal that he's is that and I love it I, I couldn't be happier that they resigned him and I think the joke is you're going to surprise some people this year yes or no.

00:49:24:21 - 00:49:47:03
Unknown
A friend of mine from work told me fellow giant fan, he's like, I'm glad we signed Barkley to. But no matter what, he's coming out looking like the bad guy, though. Barkley Yeah, not necessarily or yeah. Oh yeah. I've said, you know that he I don't know if he out said he would have said he would have sat out or if he intimated it.

00:49:47:03 - 00:50:08:01
Unknown
But I don't know. Yes. What and you know and that gets forgiven the first game when he breaks one for 75 yards in the fucking bad guy anymore. Trust me, I you know, I said something to him like that, too. I said some. I was like, yeah, watch after the first game when like, you know, when he breaks one and I'm like, we're going to forget.

00:50:08:01 - 00:50:38:05

He's. It'll be all right. Let's see. I think the Giants realize as well and I get it like, remember I said how Belichick never really drafted high for running backs they'd be interchangeable to play a couple of years from the got a couple of years gone with no they never had a big name running back Yeah I the Giants realize that obviously Daniel Jones got more mature Brian Gable the the head coach made a world of difference with Daniel Jones.

It's getting there. But they also realize that what SEC one did and does takes that takes a lot of the pressure off of Daniel Jones and allowed him to move forward in his learning and his his playing. So there's those. And that's an intelligent rebuttal. Rocco Well, and I because the you know, we had firing head on and the jets, you know the giant we live in Giants Jets country where it's like, you know, Yankees, Giants, Jets, the hoopla this offseason is for the Jets because they signed what did they just sign?

Didn't they just sign somebody Like I said, Wilson I don't know what Hardman A hard man's good to find this was it Mecole Hardman wide receiver had and C.J. use a man. Use them to use Omar. Holy shit. And Tony Bennett and Shane O'Connor. Okay. Bah bah bah bah bah bah. Yeah. Rock. No. One of the most classic, classic scenes in a movie is when Rest in Peace. Ray Liotta, a.k.a. Henry Hill Hendrie is walking into the club and or yeah, I think he's walking into the club and he's pretty much introducing all his gang members, all his friends.

00:53:54:01 - 00:54:16:20

You know, go get the papers, get the papers and you can fuck. And then there was this one player. But. And his brother. But do you remember right as he's walking in? See, I'm confused in the scene when he walks in with a with caring patient. Basically what you're trying to tell me, you don't know what the fuck you're talking about.

00:54:16:20 - 00:54:44:13

Yeah, no, but when he's. But when he's introducing all of his all the mob, all his characters, all the guys in the background, so Rags to riches by Tony Bennett, you know, resurrected like that just makes me like, like that. Couldn't have there couldn't have been a more perfect fucking song that that scene. Do you know what I'm saying?

00:54:44:15 - 00:55:17:06

Yeah. God rest in peace. Tony Bennett. Tony Bennett was an angel. Angel Italia. Right. He came up. I'd never like, I guess in show biz, having Italian name wasn't advantageous back then. That's right. That's not his real name. I think it was Othello DiBenedetto. Right. Yeah. And had it changed? Everyone chopped a fucking vowel off because it wasn't accepted.

00:55:17:08 - 00:55:53:14

That's right. That's right. Holy shit. You're right. He was the. He was like the last of like those classic, like cabaret fuckin. Yeah. Yeah. Rat Pack ish. But it. And crooners. What? And what you hear from stars from musicians today. They said that, like, in his eighties, I mean, he was 96 when he just recently passed, but his voice was strong and top notch.

00:55:53:16 - 00:56:32:11

The like. Like. Like when you performed a Tony Bennett, you were performing. Yeah, Well, so yeah, I mean, he an icon. Fucking icon. One of the last of the crooners. Great. Great. Full head of fake hair, leather. Fake. Is it? It's all a part of, you know, of it wouldn't, but you'll choke up because he would sing and his and his eyebrows would move, but his hair wouldn't.

00:56:32:13 - 00:56:57:04

No. No need to. Yeah. Like I left my heart in San Francisco. Rags to riches. The album he did with fucking Lady Gaga. Like, that was, like, his last, like, iconic, like, because that's a big album. A lot of people like that album. You had the Lady Gaga, so. God, I love Rags to riches. Such a great fucking song.

00:56:57:06 - 00:57:12:06

Rest in peace. Tony Bennett and we want to give another shout out.

00:57:12:08 - 00:57:36:11

Let's be honest. Ahead of her time. Yeah. Ripping up a picture of the Pope in 92 ahead of her time of Saturday Night Live. Trying to. Trying to prevent child abuse. Yeah. In the. Oh, here we go. If I say something stupid in the Vatican. The Vatican? Yeah, yeah, yeah. People wouldn't take it that way at the time.

00:57:36:13 - 00:58:06:20
Unknown
No. Whole. Wow. In 1992, we watched on Saturday Night Live, Sinead O'Connor and her performance and we say something about, I don't know, two lines, but, you know, we need to stop this now. And went on camera and ripped up a picture of the pope. That's fucking crazy. Because, like, nowadays, that's that's like, you know, brave and that's, you know.

00:58:06:22 - 00:58:41:01
Unknown
Yeah. Almost normal. To be honest with you, you know, just. Yeah. But in 92, you got to understand the time and place That shit wasn't, you know, like, that was headlines on the fucking paper. And they were. They were. They were cursing her out. Boy. But a rest in peace. The Sinead O'Connor wonderful voice. She got so much fucking backlash for that.

00:58:41:07 - 00:59:06:10
Unknown
Yeah. And you remember the next season, Joe Pesci holds the record of a picture of Sinead O'Connor. Did he really? I don't think anybody knew what she was, what it was about, what? You know, what she was trying to fight. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Everybody out there. If you know, one of our biggest hits happened to be a cover prince, I think nothing compares to you.

But she did a beautiful version. With that being said, Chris Cornell did a great version. Yes. Let's not be honest. Like Chris Cornell could sing anything. Yeah, but there's a couple of songs that are really good. If you people out there don't know Sinead O'Connor listen to Nothing Compares to you. Drink before the war. Mandinka It's a good song.

I don't if I'm saying it correctly, but she does a cover of Nirvana's All Apologies. That's really very good. Very, very good. Yes, very good. Period. I almost like I hear I hear it right now. Uh, you fix that in post-production, magically appear in editing. It's magically going to be there. I'm on my desk. You're like, Wait a minute.

But I know she had some mental issues or mental trouble. And I think I think her son passed away not too long ago. Yeah, he's only 56 years old. Yeah. And and you would think, at least from our eyes, I think she'd be like a little older, right? Yeah, I was actually surprised. I thought she'd be a little over 61.

Yeah, you know, but rest in peace, Annette O'Connor, you will be missed. Your voice. You know, iconic fucking shaved head, too. Yeah. Everybody knows, like. Yeah, yeah. I can guarantee people are her for Halloween. Definitely. Definitely. Or Sigourney Weaver from Alien
